A FABRIC ARTIST'S JOURNEY . . . Star Blankets and More

I was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan but have roots throughout the Province.  In my earliest memories, I hear the sound of a sewing machine.  I remember watching my mother and grandmother(s) construct beautiful yet functional items from fabric.  It was natural as I grew older to begin sewing my own pieces and for years I dabbled in a wide range of sewing projects.

I have always been drawn to the natural textures and colors of fabric.  While in University, I was given a Swoop Eagle star quilt pattern and I immediately connected with the Star Quilt tradition.  As I began experimenting with arrangements and placements of colors within the eight-point Star layout, stories emerged through the patterns.  If I started a Star Quilt or another sewing piece incorporating the star pattern, by the time I was finished, the piece would find it's home.

Within the eight point Morning Star design, I feel a connection to my métis heritage which continues to be a personal journey of discovery.  In honor of 'walking two worlds', I have carried the traditional star pattern to other projects . . . and my story continues to be written through the morning star design created in the medium of fabric.
